Iron Works
- Details

- Published on Monday, 24 September 2007 00:15
Hidden behind the spotlight of Georgia Southern’s athletic success may be the most important component of why there is a beacon to begin with.
Away from the playing fields, the cameras, and the excitement exists Iron Works, the heart of GSU’s strength and conditioning for all 15 intercollegiate teams. There, athletes enhance their physical capabilities through the training leadership of certified coaches, and the ending results are usually displayed in the win column.
Built in 1989, the recent Iron Works renovation included the addition of offices and the total rehab of the entrance and interior. Nearly $50,000 worth of new weight equipment including multisquat racks, two Olympic platforms complete with bumpers plates and bars, free weights, hammer machines and body weight scale were added. The biggest addition is a Mondo surface track 9x60 feet running down the middle of Iron Works for warm-up and agility work.
Already at 5,400 square feet, the addition of nearly 1,000 square feet - including storage areas and modernized reception area previously not available - makes Iron Works a premier workout facility.
Facts
Dimensions: 6,400 square feet
Equipment: free weights, power racks (10), Olympic platforms complete with training bumpers and bars (8) hammer isolation lateral rows (4),
back machines (4), reverse hypers (3), glute/ham raises (3), Vertimax jump trainers (2)
Miscellaneous: Fully carpeted, dead-lift platforms, 27’x 5’sand pit, 50’x60’ plyometric and conditioning field.

STATESBORO, Ga. - Jacqueline Irwin, Ph.D., has been hired as Director of Student-Athlete Services at Georgia Southern University. Through a variety of programs and services, Irwin and the Student-Athlete Services staff will oversee the academic welfare of 360 Eagle student-athletes from orientation through graduation.
For the last four years, Irwin held the position of assistant professor of communication studies at Sacramento State University while also serving as the academic advisor for the Hornet football team. Additional responsibilities for Irwin included the advisement of the Hornet men's basketball team and committee appointments addressing academic standards and policy.
Irwin completed her bachelor of fine arts in graphic design from the University of Kansas in 2001 and continued her studies at Kansas, earning a M.A. and Ph.D. in communication studies. While pursuing her advanced degrees, she taught courses in the KU communications studies department and worked for the Jayhawk men's basketball program as a strategic tutor and academic counselor.
An active member of several committees at Sacramento State, Irwin served on the University Academic Policy Committee and Intercollegiate Athletics Advisory Committee. She chaired Sacramento State's Department of Communications Academic Affairs Committee for three years and served as one of the department's faculty senate representatives for two years. The El Dorado, Kan., native is a member of the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics, National Communication Association and Central States Communication Association.
Irwin, a fifth-generation educator, was the lead author with three others of a college textbook, "Competent Communication at Work: Strategies & Standards for Success," due to be released next month.
