STATESBORO, Ga. Georgia Southern Athletics, the Southern Conference and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association are teaming up to “Pack the House in Pink” as part of a national effort to raise awareness of breast cancer treatment, prevention and research. The initiative, which encourages all in attendance to wear pink, is part of the GSU men’s and women’s basketball doubleheader, Saturday (Jan. 26) at Hanner Fieldhouse.
In addition to players, coaches, managers and scorer’s table personnel wearing pink ribbons and other pink attire, Georgia Southern will be providing literature on breast cancer awareness and will be collecting donations for local initiatives through the Women’s Service League and GSU sororities Phi Mu and Zeta Tau Alpha.
Additionally, over 2,000 promotional items such as balloons, buttons, bracelets, shirts and ribbons all pink will be handed out to promote breast cancer awareness.
In conjunction with the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, the Southern Conference has furthermore designated Saturday, February 9 as “Think Pink” day at all women’s basketball games played in the Conference that day.
“We are fully supportive of the WBCA’s efforts to shine a greater light on the importance of breast cancer awareness and prevention,” said John Iamarino, Commissioner of the Southern Conference. “Our basketball teams can be ambassadors to help deliver this message to our local communities.”
The five SoCon women’s basketball games scheduled for February 9 are Davidson at Appalachian State, Chattanooga at Elon, College of Charleston at Furman, Western Carolina at UNC Greensboro, and Georgia Southern at Wofford.
