GSU, SoCon, WBCA Designate 'Think Pink' Day for Basketball

Details

STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern Athletics, the Southern Conference and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association are teaming up to “Pack the House in Pink” as part of a national effort to raise awareness of breast cancer treatment, prevention and research. The initiative, which encourages all in attendance to wear pink, is part of the GSU men’s and women’s basketball doubleheader, Saturday (Jan. 26) at Hanner Fieldhouse.

In addition to players, coaches, managers and scorer’s table personnel wearing pink ribbons and other pink attire, Georgia Southern will be providing literature on breast cancer awareness and will be collecting donations for local initiatives through the Women’s Service League and GSU sororities Phi Mu and Zeta Tau Alpha.

Additionally, over 2,000 promotional items such as balloons, buttons, bracelets, shirts and ribbons – all pink – will be handed out to promote breast cancer awareness.

In conjunction with the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, the Southern Conference has furthermore designated Saturday, February 9 as “Think Pink” day at all women’s basketball games played in the Conference that day.

“We are fully supportive of the WBCA’s efforts to shine a greater light on the importance of breast cancer awareness and prevention,” said John Iamarino, Commissioner of the Southern Conference. “Our basketball teams can be ambassadors to help deliver this message to our local communities.”

The five SoCon women’s basketball games scheduled for February 9 are Davidson at Appalachian State, Chattanooga at Elon, College of Charleston at Furman, Western Carolina at UNC Greensboro, and Georgia Southern at Wofford. Davidson, a road team on February 9, has announced that it will organize a “Think Pink” for its community on Friday, February 15 when it plays host to UNC Greensboro.

The Southern Conference is in its 87th year of providing quality competition for young men and women. The Conference consists of 11 institutions located in four states. The 2007-08 year marks the 25th anniversary of women’s championship sports in the Conference. More than 3,000 student-athletes compete in the 19 championship sports sponsored by the SoCon.

Georgia Southern Football is coming off an exciting 7-4 season in which the Eagles narrowly missed recapturing the Southern Conference Championship. Excitement is high in Statesboro as the second edition of the “Hatch Attack” looks to make another run at the Southern Conference title and the FCS playoffs. Many new faces will don the Blue and White this season as the Eagles try to once again make “The Prettiest Little Stadium in America” one of the toughest places in the country for opponents to play. Georgia Southern will be looking to once again break home attendance records at Paulson Stadium as average attendance for the 2007 season exceeded 19,000 per game

So come on out to “Our House” this season to be a part of the action and watch the Eagles take on the Southern Conference. Gus will be on hand all season to lead the home crowd, and we hope to get you ready for the upcoming season this Saturday as Gus visits Eagle fans around Savannah.
