STATESBORO, Ga. – A record number of Georgia Southern University students cast their ballots to support three new proposed student fees during an online vote this past week.
A record turnout of more than 9,390 students, nearly 55 percent of eligible students (students who paid Student Activity Fees this semester), voted to approve three fees including: a fee to fund an expansion of Allen E. Paulson Football stadium ($25); a fee to fund Georgia Southern's potential move up to the Football Bowl Subdivision ($75); and a fee support for Sustainability and Green efforts on campus ($10).
The University will now forward the proposed fees to the University System of Georgia’s Board of Regents for their review and consideration.
““This past week a record number of Georgia Southern students voted on three proposed student fees and to express their support for the future direction of this great University,” said Dominique Quarles, president of the Student Government Association at Georgia Southern. “The University asked us for our opinion and the results speak for themselves.”
“This has been a student-led process from the beginning, and we are exceptionally proud of the effort our Student Government Association has made to provide objective information and encourage their fellow students to vote. This entire process is another example of the student-centeredness of Georgia Southern,” said Georgia Southern University President Brooks Keel, Ph.D. “Whether it in the area of academics, research, sustainability, economic development or athletics, our goal is to take Georgia Southern University to the next level,” said Keel. “From what I have been told, this is one the largest turnouts for a student vote on our campus.”
While there has been much discussion about the two athletic-related fees, Georgia Southern University leaders were particularly impressed with the high vote of confidence that the sustainability efforts fee received. The proposed $10 fee passed with 7,018 students (74.9%) voting in favor. This past year, Georgia Southern was nationally recognized for its efforts when it was named to the Princeton Review's Guide to 322 Green Colleges, recognizing the University's commitment to sustainability and green initiatives.
“Georgia Southern students have a desire to make a difference in the world. They want to improve their surroundings and are very aware and interested in topics concerning the environment,” said Keel.
Next Step
The student vote is just the first step in the process. The University will now forward the proposed fees to the University System of Georgia’s Board of Regents for their review and consideration. If approved, the expansion fee and sustainability fee will go into effect Fall 2013. If approved, the “FBS fee” will not go into effect until Georgia Southern University is offered and accepts an invitation to join an FBS conference. Timing for implementing the “FBS fee” will be dependent upon when the University receives an invitation from an FBS conference.

STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern women's rifle team will hold tryouts for its inaugural team Wednesday, May 1, from 3-6 p.m. at the shooting range behind the Recreation Activity Center on Register Road.
Students must bring a copy of a physical within the last six months signed by a physician, proof of medical insurance and a valid Eagle ID in order to try out. Georgia Southern Director of Athletics Tom Kleinlein announced that school was adding women's rifle as its 16th intercollegiate sport in April. MSG Tim Parks will serve as the program's first coach. The Eagles will use the shooting range behind the Recreation Activity Center on Register Road as their home facility until the Georgia Southern Shooting Sports Education Center, slated to open in the fall of 2014, is completed.
Georgia Southern will compete in the Air Rifle discipline to start. Air Rifle uses a 0.177 caliber pellet, and shooters are 10 meters from the target. For women, the shooter gets 40 targets and one shot per target. Each shot scores from 1-10, and a perfect score is 600. The total time limit to complete the targets is 1-hour, 15 minutes. Each team declares five shooters before the match, and four scores count towards the overall team score.

MACON, GA - The Georgia Sports Hall of Fame (GSHF) narrowed its list for individuals eligible for induction in 2011 from 70 to 36 nominees, which includes Georgia Southern All-America quarterback Tracy Ham and four-time All-State and two-time basketball All-American Chester Webb. Ham, recently inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame and a 2007 inductee to the College Football Hall of Fame, is Georgia Southern's all-time leader in total offense (8,969 yards), passing (5,757 yards) and passing touchdowns (34) as well as holding numerous other Eagle records. Webb played from 1952-56 under the Georgia Teachers College mantle and ranks as the all-time leading scorer (2,542 points) and rebounder (1,685) in the history of the program.
The Screening Committee is made up of GSHF board members, hall of famers, sports media representatives and athletic administrators. After discussing each of the nominees, the members of the committee voted for the individuals they considered most qualified to be the newest members of the hall of fame. The nominees receiving the highest number of votes in their respective categories will now be forwarded to the Honors Court who will choose the seven individuals that will be enshrined in 2011.
Among the football, basketball, and baseball players and coaches still eligible are a number of athletes and contributors from less-publicized areas of athletics. These include two track & field athletes, two golfers, two gymnasts, two athletic administrators, a soccer player, a referee, a tennis player, a broadcaster, and a boxer. Georgia Southern alum, Marvin Vanover, who has had a long career as a coach and administrator, is among the list of nominees.
The GSHF Honors Court will meet in Macon on Tuesday, September 14 to make the final selections for the Class of 2011. Those selected by the Honors Court will be honored at the 2011 GSHF Induction Ceremony.

MACON, Ga. - The Georgia Sports Hall of Fame (GSHF) announced its list of 35 finalists eligible for induction with four Georgia Southern representatives included for 2012. Mickey Cobb, sports medicine pioneer, All-America quarterback Tracy Ham, legendary Baseball Coach Jack Stallings and two-time All-American Chester Webb were among the individuals to advance to the Honors Court. The GSHF Honors Court meets in mid-September to make the final seven selections for the Class of 2012.
The first full-time athletic trainer at Georgia Southern who later went on to work with the Kansas City Royals, Cobb is considered one of the nation's leading consultants on the topics of physical fitness, injury rehabilitation and working with the handicapped. Ham, a 2010 Canadian Football Hall of Fame and 2007 College Football Hall of Fame inductee, led Georgia Southern to back-to-back national championships in 1985 and 1986. He is the Eagles’ all-time leader in total offense (8,969 yards), passing (5,757 yards) and passing touchdowns (34) and holds numerous other marks. Stallings was the skipper of the Eagles for 24 seasons and recorded 858 wins during his tenure, guiding the Eagles to a World Series appearance (1990), five NCAA postseason appearances and seven conference titles.
After discussing each of the nominees, the members of the committee voted for the individuals they considered worthy of advancing as finalists for the induction class. The finalists receiving the highest number of votes in their respective categories will be forwarded to the Honors Court who will choose the seven individuals to be enshrined.
