Hall of Fame Member Brenda Carter Named to U.S. Women's Alice Marble Cup Team
MIAMI, Fla. – Former Associate Director of Athletics and Georgia Southern Hall of Fame member, Brenda Carter has been selected to join the United States Women’s Alice Marble Cup Tennis team. This will be the ninth year she has represented the United States on a Senior International Tennis team.
The United States Tennis Association (USTA) selected the team which will compete in the prestigious International Federation Super Seniors World Team Championships in Antalya, Turkey, beginning October 11.
More than 700 of the best tennis players in the world, ages 60-75, will compete in the tournament, which runs from Oct. 11-16, 2010. Joining Carter on the Alice Marble Cup team will be Martha Downing, Carol Clay (captain) and Kerry Young.
Ranked No. 1 for five consecutive years (2004-‘08) in her age group, Carter held the National Clay Court Women’s Singles title for four years between 2006-‘09. She was inducted into the South Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame in 2009.
“I am so humbled and honored to play on a USA Cup team as it means I’ve been given an opportunity to represent my country while competing with the best tennis players in the world in my age division,” Carter explains.
The USTA owns and stages the US Open and selects men’s and women’s teams that compete in major Davis Cup, Fed Cup and Olympics games competition as well as senior international team competitions. The USTA is the national governing body for the sport of tennis in America and is a not-for-profit organization with more than 670,000 members. It invests all its resources to promote and develop the growth of tennis, from the grassroots to international individual and professional levels.
Brenda Carter served as Georgia Southern's first Senior Woman Administrator from 1993 to 1999. She was also the faculty chair of athletics (1990-92), associate athletics director and an assistant professor in the mathematics and computer science department. In 2004, she was inducted into the Georgia Southern Athletics Hall of Fame.
