Lady Eagles Season Ends In Overtime

Asheville, N.C. - The Georgia Southern Lady Eagles' season ended Friday afternoon after a devastating 61-56 overtime loss to Western Carolina. A MiMi DuBose (Jefferson, Ga.) layup, with twelve seconds left in the second half, tied the game at 45 and sent the game into the extra period. The Catamounts went on a 5-0 run to start overtime and the Lady Eagles were unable to overcome the deficit, falling by five.

"The biggest thing I was proud of was our defense," said Head Coach . "We just kept reiterating that during timeouts and after halftime, that we were playing great defense."

Dubose led the Lady Eagles with twelve points. Janay Wilson (Warner Robins, Ga.) and Samantha Williams (Kingsport, Tenn.) also added eight points each.

After a slow start to begin the game, the Lady Eagles picked up the intensity midway through the first half. Back to back threes by with six minutes left in the first half jump started GSU's offense, tying the game at 14. A three pointer by Dubose, with 4:02 remaining, gave Georgia Southern its first lead of the game at 19-17. The Lady Eagles played locked down defense, holding the Catamounts to 35 percent field goal shooting, and took a 25-20 leading going into halftime.

Anna Claire Knight (Dublin, Ga.) drained two buckets to open the second half, and layups from Danielle Spencer (Atlanta, Ga.) and MiMI DuBose gave GSU a nine point lead, its largest of the game. But as the second-half continued, the Lady Eagles were unable to hold on. The Catamounts slowly climbed back into the game, and two freethrows from Diamond Honeycutt with 1:07 left in the second half gave Western Carolina its first lead of the period. Another Western freethrow game the Catamounts a 45-43 lead, when DuBose's layup tied the game, sending it into overtime.

The Lady Eagles split the two meetings this season with Western, but were unable to win the rubber match. GSU made 23 of 56 fieldgoals, going 41 percent. Turnovers, once again, proved too costly for the Lady Eagles, giving the ball up 24 times on Friday.

This was the final game for Seniors and . The Lady Eagles will look to reload and come back, ready for next season.
