Eagles Split Twin Bill at Jacksonville
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Georgia Southern Softball split an afternoon doubleheader against Jacksonville on the banks of the St. John's River Tuesday evening. Jacksonville tossed a no-hitter in the opener and got two runs in the sixth to get the win, 2-0. In game two, Georgia Southern stymied the Dolphins and took a 1-0 win to improve to 32-17 on the season.
Jacksonville took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth with a home run down the line in left. The Dolphin leadoff hitter, Codi Kelly, was responsible for the solo homer, her first of the season, opened the sixth frame. JU loaded the bases later in the inning and added another run on a sacrifice fly to take a 2-0 lead into the seventh inning.
The Eagles were held hitless for the first time this season as Jacksonville took the 2-0 victory. Georgia Southern put a runner on base in the fourth on an error. Sarah Sigrest's no hitter was her first this season.
(Warner Robins, Ga.) went the distance for the Eagles and pitched well despite allowing the two runs in the sixth inning. She didn't walk a batter on the afternoon and allowed six hits, falling to 16-9 on the season.
The Eagle offense got on the board in the third inning when Alexa Lewis (Lawrenceville, Ga.) singled up the middle. A walk to (Snellville, Ga.) put Lewis in scoring position for (Rincon, Ga.) with two outs in the inning. Fogle beat out a single to the shortstop to keep the inning alive as Lewis rounded third and dove in under the tag for the Eagles' first run of the game. That run gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead after two and half innings, a lead that would be enough for the win.
Jacksonville put a pair of runners on base with no outs in the seventh inning, but (Dacula, Ga.) worked out of the jam to finish her first shutout of the season. She went the distance and improved to 5-5 on the season. Miles fanned five on the evening and allowed eight Jacksonville hits.
This weekend, Georgia Southern hosts the final regular season games at Eagle Field for the 2012 campaign against Elon. GSU will honor its seniors on Saturday prior to the 1 p.m. doubleheader. Fans are encouraged to arrive early for the ceremony that recognizes Georgia Southern's four seniors.
