Golf Finish Second in SoCon Tournament

Daniel Island, S.C. - The Georgia Southern golf team came up one spot short of defending their conference title Tuesday, as the Eagles finished second in the Southern Conference Tournament. Georgia Southern shot 289 in the final day to jump into second place, but were unable to overcome Chattanooga. The Mocs shot 281 in the final round to cement their victory. Chattanooga shot 861 for the tournament good for three-under par.

"We played solid this week and finished second to a good Chattanooga team with one of the top 15 players in the country playing at his best," said Georgia Southern Golf Coach Larry Mays. "I am proud of our effort and excited about the future as we have a great base of young talent to work with the next few years. This finish was a step in the right direction as we put together some solid rounds on a tough golf course under championship conditions."

Georgia Southern shot 880 for the tournament, finishing 16 over par. The second place finish is the highest finish of the season for the Eagles this season.

The St. Simons Island freshmen tandem of Zach Hartman and Scott Wolfes both played some of their best golf of the year. Wolfes shot a 70 on the final day as Hartman shot a 72 as both finished in a tie for fourth at three-over par.

Both Wolfes and Hartman were honored on the Conference All-Freshmen Team. Scott Wolfes went on to be named Freshman of the Year, and was joined by senior Lewis Gruber (Tallahassee, Fla.) on the All-Conference Team.

Gruber ended his career at Georgia Southern with a great effort to help guide the Eagles to the second place finish. He shot a 223, seven-over par, to finish tied for 19th and with the All-Conference accolades.

Sophomore Hayden Anderson (Knoxville, Tenn.) and junior Blake Olson (Pensacola, Fla.) both tied for 27th in the tournament. Anderson shot a 72 in the final round and Olson shot a 77, as both players went on to finish at ten-over par.

Georgia Southern will return almost the entire team next season, as Gruber is the only graduating senior. The Eagles hope the finish will propel them to another successful season in their 2012-2013 campaign.
