Eagles Suffer Tough Loss to Owls

STATESBORO, Ga. - Bad fortune continued for the Georgia Southern Men's Tennis team on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles fell to the Kennesaw State Owls by a 6-1 score. The Owls improved to 5-3 on the season.

The Eagles (1-8) were unable to gain momentum early in the match, narrowly losing the doubles point. Alain Garrido (Vigo, Spain) and Andrew Dromsky (Martinez, Ga.) got the Eagles on the board with an 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles. However, the No. 2 doubles team of Sebastien Felt (Vienna, Austria) and Daniel Rush (Orange Park, Fla.) fell by an 8-4 count. Kyle Hoffman (Sarasota, Fla.) and Albert Codina Sala (Manresa, Spain) suffered a similar fate at No. 3 doubles, dropping the match by an 8-5 score and giving the doubles point to the Owls.

The Eagles were never quite able to get into the match in singles play. Rush and Felt lost matches at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, then Garrido lost 6-4, 6-0 at No. 1 singles to clinch the match victory for the Owls. Codina Sala leveled the match at No. 3 singles by winning the second set but then lost the decisive third set. Dromsky jumped to an early one-set lead at No. 4 singles but then dropped the second in a tiebreaker and then lost the decisive third-set match tiebreaker. The bright spot for the Eagles was Hoffman's comeback victory at No. 2 singles, marking his second career collegiate singles victory and first at the No. 2 position. He prevailed, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

The Eagles have faced an arduous schedule of non-conference opponents. Six of their eight losses have been to teams who have records above .500. The team looks to regroup as it takes an off-week and prepares for conference foes Davidson and UNC Greensboro on the weekend of March 3-4 at Hanner Tennis Complex.
