Season-high Treys not Enough for Lady Eagles

STATESBORO, Ga. - Despite a season-high nine three pointers, the Georgia Southern Lady Eagles fell to the Davidson Wildcats 69-62 in the first half of a Military Appreciation doubleheader at Hanner Fieldhouse Monday. The Lady Eagles' 38-26 second half advantage was not enough to overcome an early first half deficit.

"Davidson was good in the first half, and we just got caught on our heels a few times," said Head Coach Rusty Cram. "Laura Murray was draining everything she shot for those first eight points."

MiMi DuBose (Jefferson, Ga.) connected on four-of-seven shooting from behind the arc and helped Georgia Southern (7-16, 3-11) shoot 45.0% from downtown. DuBose led the Lady Eagles with 14 points, and Meredyth Frye (Fredricksburg, Va.) notched double figures for the first time in five games with 11 points. She went a perfect five-for-five from the free throw lines.

"We got better tonight, and I started to see a little glimmer in their eyes. When they were down 20 points they could have quit, but instead we woke Davidson up," stated Cram. "I am proud of our kids."

Davidson (15-7, 11-2) took advantage of 20 GSU turnovers and converted them into 23 points. The Wildcats scored 22 points in the paint and their bench provided 20 points as well. Laura Murray helped Davidson to the early lead with 14 points in the first half and finished with a game high 17 points. Sophia Aleksandravicius added 14 points and eight rebounds to the Wildcats' 42.1% field goal shooting.

Davidson jumped out to an early 14-4 lead six minutes into the first half and held the double-digit lead for most of the period. DuBose nailed a three from beyond the arc to cut the early advantage to seven points, but the Wildcats quickly responded with a trey from Aleksandravicius to regain the 10-point spread. A three-point play from Samantha Williams (Kingsport, Tenn.) with 12:08 to play brought the Lady Eagles within nine points before Davidson embarked on a 7-0 run. The Wildcats took a 43-24 lead into the halftime break after a last-second basket by Lillian McCabe.

Davidson led by as many as 23 points in the second half but Georgia Southern embarked on a 17-4 run to trail by just nine points with 7:25 remaining. DuBose and Jordi Cook (Tunnel Hill, Ga.) hit back-to-back treys to cut the lead to 57-48. The Lady Eagles entered the final two minutes down 10 but were only able to pull within seven points on a late trey by Janay Wilson (Warner Robins, Ga.).

The Lady Eagles hit the road this weekend for two games against Samford on Saturday and Chattanooga on Monday.
